I try to avoid software thats end of life but occasionally I get stuck with a few programs that just don’t have any updated versions or are tied to a piece of hardware that I need to use.  LCDC is software designed to run little LCD displays you can buy for your computer.  I have one in particular thats over 3 years old now but still runs great.  However it hasn’t been updated well ever.

Today I took to scanning my PC and discovered that some of the plugins for LCDC were infected.  I decided to check the web site http://www.lcdc.cc/downloads.htm for updates, it didn’t appear off hand that any were actually updated, but it does appear that some are not infected and others still are.

Links13 Mailing List

This is a Weekly (or so) mailing from one of the sites more prolific providers of cool and interesting stuff.  As such I enjoy hosting it as long as the posts keep coming in.  Essentially if it’s a cool gadget, computer or not (we’ve shown bicycles, shower heads for example); affects your privacy online; funny or entertaining (subjective of course); or just news worth promoting because the mainstream missed it, you’ll find it on Links13.

The email is sent once there is 13 stories of interest and is dispensed of in a standard fashion including a title, a blurb that may try to be funny, and a link.  Most of the links are ‘shortened’ to http://jamesfriesen.net/xxx, and will redirect you to the appropriate page.  This was done for a couple reasons.

  • I hate LONG/SEO-enabled links as they’ve become incredibly wordy and long. (I think I said that, but just in case, they’re long)
  • I did not want to rely on a 3rd party URL Shortener in case they mysteriously vanish leaving all the links dead, or they become spamvertised, etc.
  • I want to see what you are visiting so I can see what you (the list subscriber) are interested in, then I can recommend more of the same.
  • I want to see what you are not interested in so I can stop such links from appearing on the list.  If no one cares then why have them?
  • They should work well with micro-blogs and Twitter where space is a concern.

So again, to sign up, subscribe, become a member/contributor click on this link and start enjoying Links13.

Hard to believe but we may see a new Amiga OS in the near future.  Seems Hyperion and Amiga Inc. have settled there legal differences and can now move forward.  As someone who still owns a couple old Amiga’s I thought it was interesting to hear, but lets be honest I’m not about to get all excited about it.

Thanks for browsing!  I am a Canadian born in Calgary.  Having lived here most of my life it’s more than just a home.  I am a certified computer programmer, low-voltage technician, security expert with decades of experience.  I currently am looking for the right company to call my employer, and work the rest of my time as a freelance computer consultant and general ‘fix it’ guy.  I’m well versed in numerous  computer programming languages incluing BASIC, COBOL, JCP, C, C++, PHP, Python, Perl, and some tiny java and ruby in my blood too.

I speak many OS’s not limited to the full gambit of Microsoft Windows (anything since ’98 including a MCSE in NT, but right up to date with Windows Server 2008, and Windows 7 Ultimate), many of the GNU/Linux Distro’s although Debian is my favorite, and am also familiar with FreeBSD.

Hardware is no challenge for this geek pornstar and enjoy taking older hardware and making new systems as well as fiddling around with network IDS/IPS monitoring and solutions. Building out small networks or expanding existing ones I’ve worked on , WiFi solutions but I spend most of my time here learning about network security monitoring the most.

If you’re in the Calgary area and need someone, send me an email telling me you read it here.  I’m always happy to have a new client, whether it’s only for a couple hours work, or more permanent arrangements.

I saw this comment today on a malware site and I normally read them to see how folks troll malware sites looking for blame.
Folks, malware is your problem, not anyone elses.  I am constantly reminded how people fail to understand that its their actions and choices that cause the infections, and today social engineering is a big reason.
Even malware experts are not immune from falling victim to their tricks.  Its been like this for years and outside of the increase in targetted attacks,
its still the #1 reason.
