If you are using Rythmbox and having trouble with getting windows shares to work, I found a neat workaround for this.  I am using Ubuntu 9.10  Karmic Koala which uses Gnome Desktop, and found a pretty simple solution, courtesy of launchpad.net which is the site where all bugs related to Ubuntu or any packages tracked back upstream can be filed, and hopefully solved.  This bug isn’t specific to Ubuntu or Gnome, but is actually a bug with Rythmbox.  You can read the bug at the link in this article, or simply follow these instructions.

From a shell or terminal (to open on click on “Applications” then “Accessories” then ‘Terminal’) copy and paste the following:

gnomevfs-ls smb://mywinpc/mymusic

Make sure before you hit enter to change ‘mywinpc’ to the actual NAME of the PC your share is located on, and ‘mymusic’ is changed to the name of the share your music is found.  This step will then display some output and tell you to then enter the username to login, the WORKGROUP name, and of course your password.  Once done it will majically mount the drive for you.

Now you should be able to start Rythmbox and select ‘Import folder’ and find this location readily available.

I wasn’t going to get into this too much since the download is one you’ll have to build and I didn’t want to go through all the motions to make this happen.  But it appears someone has created a Virtual Machine (VM) you can use to try it out.

http://gdgt.com/google/chrome-os/download/ is the place to get it at.  You will need to create an account on the site (free), download a copy of Chrome OS which they offer a link to do that and you’ll need a VM platform to get it working.  VMWare is what it’s designed for, but VirtualBox can also use vmware images but there could be issues (not all work perfectly) as you’ll see from the site.

http://www.vmware.com/products/player — To Get Vmware Player.  If you have a Mac you can use Fusion, and it should work find on other VMWare products.

http://www.virtualbox.org — To get VirtualBox, but I’d recommend installing it from your distributions repository for full support, other wise you’re on your own updating it and all that fun stuff.

http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/eula_dev.html — Source from Google, may have to jump through some hoops to download it

http://gdgt.com/google/chrome-os — To Get Chrome OS ready to go.

I have been running a links related mailing list for several of my friends and fans over the last few months and I’ve decided that I would make the list available to the general public. One person suggested I use twitter to announce new posts, but I’m still adverse to getting a twitter account at this point.  I finally got my spam down to nil tyvm and want to keep it that way.  However…I could change my mind.

This mailing list is simply a mailout published infrequently seldom more than twice a week and has the latest in technology events, the latest gadgets and toys, privacy and copyright issues, funny videos and some astronomy/aeronautics and science stuff on occasion.  Submissions are allowed and welcomed but no guarantee they will show up.  I don’t manage the content on the list and it isn’t censored so you may encounter content that may not be suitable for a younger audience.  Viewer discretion is advised.  The list is moderated by me.

With a great deal of disappointment I have to make this post.  I have been a avid user of this tool in the past (I’m still running a pretty old version of this on a XP box) since it expedited deleting of files that were locked by an application.  It would clearly identify whom locked the file and give me the option to delete it.  However it appears that it is in fact bundled with ADWARE.  This is defined by some AV products as a Trojan, including Microsoft Essentials as TrojanClicker:Win32/Yabector.gen

It should be noted that CNet’s Download.com ‘verifys’ its spyware free, yet obviously either this was a clear ‘miss’ on their part, or they do not classify adware as spyware. This confirms my thinking that anything on Download.com should be considered ‘risky’ software since they either mislead or don’t bother to check the software that’s uploaded or availble from download.com.  My thinking is they simply are misleading by ‘verify’ing it contains no spyware.  Others have disclosed this over the past year and a bit that this version has been around for download so I think ample time was provided for Cnet to correct this.

For those that have been following me since January of this year you may be aware that I took advantage of downloading the open beta version and testing it on a few machines.

I had really good luck with various systems and even installing it in VMware.  My only real hangup was my main gaming rig which runs Windows XP SP3, simply refused to detect the DVD drive.  Which was very strange since it was booting and running the setup from the very same drive.  All the VMware machine I build used the same drive also although I’m aware VMware does use it’s own drivers but that was it.  Every other box, method I tried worked without major problem

Today Saturday Oct 24, 2009 I took the liberty of installing both Windows 7 Ultimate x64 AND Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 Karmic Koala Release Candidate x64 on the exact same laptop a Compaq presario CQ60 laptop which came with Vista Home Basic which I really did not want.  If you want to find out about my Installation for Ubuntu check out the next story.  I’m publishing this one first so it should be the one right after or the newer one.
